De or het? Check any Dutch noun

Dutch has two words for "the", and a noun does not tell you which one it takes. Type a noun below to see whether it is de or het, with its meaning and its plural. It checks Tungo's list of more than 1,100 everyday nouns, the same words the app teaches.

How to tell de from het

Most Dutch nouns take de: about seven in ten of the nouns in Tungo's list. Het is the minority, which is why it pays to know which words take it. A few patterns settle a large share of them.

Everything else has to be learned with the word. That is why Tungo always teaches a noun together with its article: het huis, never just huis.

Why the article matters

The article decides more than one word. It decides whether you say deze or dit for "this" and die or dat for "that", and whether an adjective takes an -e: een grote tafel, but een groot huis. Getting de and het right is what makes your Dutch sound natural rather than learned from a book.

De or het: common questions

Is it de or het huis?

Het huis. You can check any other noun with the tool at the top of this page.

Are plurals de or het?

Always de. Het huis becomes de huizen, and het meisje becomes de meisjes.

Why is it het meisje, when a girl is female?

Because meisje ends in -je, which makes it a diminutive, and every diminutive takes het. In Dutch the grammar wins over the meaning here.

Does een change with de and het?

No. Een is the same for both: een tafel, een huis. The difference shows up in adjectives instead: een grote tafel, but een groot huis.

Is there a rule that always works?

Only for a few groups: diminutives, verbs used as nouns, and plurals. For most nouns there is no reliable rule, so learn each one together with its article.

Which is more common, de or het?

De. About seven in ten of the nouns in Tungo's list take de, so if you have to guess, guess de.
