CILS, CELI or PLIDA: which Italian certificate

Italy has four recognised certificate families and they are genuinely interchangeable for most purposes, which makes the choice easier than it looks. The exception is the citizenship route, where one of them offers a shorter exam built specifically for it.

CILS and CELI, the two universities

CILS comes from the Università per Stranieri di Siena and CELI from the Università per Stranieri di Perugia. Both cover A1 to C2, both are recognised by the Italian state, and both are accepted for university admission and for residence. For most people either will do.

PLIDA, and why availability decides

PLIDA is run by the Società Dante Alighieri and is the easiest to find outside Italy, because the Dante Alighieri network has branches in a great many countries. If you are preparing from abroad, that availability is often the deciding factor rather than any difference in the exam.

The shorter exam for citizenship

For citizenship there is a shortcut worth knowing about: CILS offers a dedicated B1 Cittadinanza exam, shorter and cheaper than the full B1 because it tests only listening, reading, writing and speaking at the level the application requires. If the certificate is purely for the application, it is the efficient choice.

Which one to book

So the decision comes down to purpose and geography. Applying for citizenship, sit CILS B1 Cittadinanza. Studying in Italy, sit CILS or CELI at B2 or above. Preparing abroad with no centre nearby, sit PLIDA. And in every case confirm what the specific office or university accepts before paying the fee.
